Welcome to our Top 10 listing of New Jersey's most inquired about charities.

Before you contribute to a charity, you should know how your money will be used. You should also easily be able to access fundamental information about that charity, including its income and expenses. That is why the Division of Consumer Affairs is providing you with the information found here.

The following list, which will be updated bi-monthly, highlights the ten charities that have generated the most calls from consumers to the Division's Charities Registration hotline during the most recent two-month period. The large number of calls received for any of the listed charities may be the result of a charity soliciting donations during a recent or ongoing campaign drive. The information we have posted for each charity is information the charity disclosed to the Division of Consumer Affairs as part of its most recent annual registration. Our objective is to share that information with you, the consumer, so you can make a more informed decision as to how much and to whom you may wish to give.

And as always, we urge you - investigate before you donate.

You can obtain financial information on any charity registered to solicit funds in the State, by contacting the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.

Consumers can turn to the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs' Directory of Registered Charities for information on the income and expenses reported by each charity registered to solicit funds in the State.

To obtain more detailed financial information by requesting a charity's annual filing information, consumers can call the Division's Charities Registration hotline, 973-504-6215, from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays.

Glossary of Terms Fund-Raising Expenses - The dollars that are spent raising money to enable the charity to continue to exist. Management & General Expenses - The dollars that are spent running the organization such as salaries, office expenses, etc. Net Assets - Sometimes called "net worth", net assets equal a charity's assets minus its liabilities. Payments to Affiliates - The dollars that are spent by national charities to the local or state chapters; conversely, some local chapters pay dues to national offices. Program Expenses - The dollars that are spent on the activities or programs for which the charity was founded. Total Gross Revenue - The total of direct public contributions, indirect public contributions, government grants and any other support. Total Expenses - The sum of the expenses catagories.
